These four pieces represent a metaphorical approach to the
subject of Swimming Pool...Self-Portrait (Between)
symbolizes the movement created in swimming/drowning.Two
Figures also explore the theme of drowning...interpret this
how you will. Quietus has a more literal feel to it with the
water element....yet still remains metaphorical for the most
part. Floating pairs with the theme of drowning...
The figure dominates much of my work as it is subject matter
that we as individuals all identify with on some level. The
underlying narrative in each piece is usually quite
subtle. There is a prevailing sense of isolation and
alienation within my paintings. I want the viewer to wonder
what is beyond the edges of the canvas. I periodically use
cropping to emphasize this theme and to create tension
within the works. I paint to capture the transitory nature
of the world and our place within it. The viewer should
never be completely comfortable while looking at my work.
They are not conventional portraits but rather use figure as
a vehicle for eliciting an emotional/psychological response.
