Creatrix II is a painting that explores the connections
between spirit, woman, mother, matter and creation. The
woman is standing in water, the generative symbol of life.
She holds a fetus that is encapsulated in a womb of water.
The woman is not pregnant herself. Instead, she holds the
possibility of motherhood and the creation of life in her
hands. She, in turn, is the macrocosm of a fetus standing in
a watery world, a womb held in the hands of the Goddess, the
generative force that makes all creation possible. I am
interested in the birth of human life as it was understood
in Paleolithic times when the mysteriesof birth and
menstrual cycles were associated with cosmic
forces, especially the moon. It is thought that the harmonic
correspondence between moon cycles and woman's mysterious
menstrual cycles of blood led to the belief that women
shared a special kinship to the inexplicable powers of the
universe. To the Paleolithic mind there was a seamless
flowbetween woman, birth and Spirit. It is this idea that is
the inspirationfor Creatrix II.
